Summary of Island of the Blue Dolphins by: Scott O'Dell
On the coast of California, there is an island. The island of Galas-at or is well known as being named The Island of the Blue Dolphins. Island of the Blue Dolphins by: Scott O'Dell is a story about a girl names Karana who lives on the island with her tribe. Aleuts from Russia come to the island in hopes for permission to hunt sea otter, but only if the tribe gets their fair share as well. The Chief happily says yes and is on their way. As the Aleuts wrap up their time there on the island of Galas-at, the tribe is wanting their share of the otter before they leave, but the tribe didn't know that the Aleuts were not planning on giving them their share. The conflict causes a major battle between the two sides and leaves most of the men dead from both sides. The Chief was among these men. Due to the death of the Chief, the tribe was forced to find a new Chief. Later a new Chief and found, but decided to go the the white man's land in search of something new. When he came back, the tribe was going to go with him again. Karana's brother Ramo was so excited for the new land, but is accidentally left behind when he forgets something in the village. This leaving Karana to flee the ship and go back with her brother. Now they are left alone on the island. Unfortunately later that month, Ramo is killed by a pack of wild wolves, now officially leaving Karana all by herself with no one on the island. Will she survive? Will the ship come back?

Karana reminds me of my Grandma because no matter what, she always tries to look on the bright side of a dark day and is always working hard to keep up the family business, even when things go wrong. She also reminds me of my Grandma because both of them always find way to fix problems and work things out when somethig goes very wrong. Karana reminds me of me because she looks like me and we always try to have some fun every day and always explore what might come to each day. Although, her situation does not remind me of a similar time in my life because I never experienced anything that close to what happened to her.

The main scene in this book reminds me of a somewhat similar scene in A Long Way Gone because like Karana, Ishmael had to survive on his own with many conflicts around him. Even though in Island of the Blue Dolphins Karana doesn't have to survive a major war, she still has dangers around her that could affect the way fate of survival. With Ishmael, he needs to be able to think fast and hide from the war that his country is in because it could affect his life as soon as he is captured by the rebels that have taken over. Karana is also like Ishmael in A Long Way Gone because both of their families are no where to be seen and both their siblings unfortunately die. Despite the sad similarities that are shared between the two, they also have some good similarities as well. For example, both characters survive their problem and both were able to do it on their own. They were both able to use their knowledge in their home lands and use that knowledge to be able to eat, drink water, and many more for their survival.

The problem in this story is similar to a event that happened in history. The problem in the book is Karana gets left behind by her tribe on the island and has to survive all alone and has to be smart about her decisions. I can connect this to back when the Civil War in Sierra Leone was happening. When everyone, including baby's, young children, teenagers, adults, and more have to try to survive when they are alone and far away from their families. Not even knowing where they are, they have to survive and watch their every move as the rebels will kill anyone and everyone at any time. This is mostly what Karana has to go through, not even knowing where her family is and not even knowing what to do.
This problem is definitely similar to current situations and events in our world today. In fact it happens all the time, when people are getting lost and abandoned on hikes and ships and have to survive on their own.
Conclusion
In this book, I loved the way Karana was able to keep a positive attitude the whole way and was able to find different ways to survive and find food and water. I can't believe that she made friends with the wolf that killed her brother and was able to cooperate with the wolf that could have killed her at any time. I felt sad though when I figured out at the end of the story that the ship her tribe was on sank with no one living and no one to come back for her. I also felt sad when Rontu died, which was her wolf friend that she loved so much. I wish that she didn't get left behind and her brother wasn't killed and so many other little problems that made one big problem for her. Lastly, the character I mostly admire is Karana because again she was able to find the bright side of her problems and was able to keep calm the whole time she was on the Island of the Blue Dolphins.
